Why NursEscape?
Nursing education is not limited to acquiring theoretical knowledge. Learners need opportunities to use what they learn, connect information, recognize priorities, address problems and make decisions in situations that approximate clinical reality.
NursEscape was created with this philosophy: to provide a digital environment in which knowledge becomes an active learning experience. Through educational escape rooms and clinically oriented scenarios, learners are not simply asked to recall information, but to connect it, evaluate it and use it to address problems and make decisions.
Each activity can be designed around specific learning objectives and linked to assessment and feedback processes. In this way, the game is not an end in itself, but is integrated into the learning process as a means of active participation and application of knowledge.
At the centre is the transition from knowledge to application and from information to clinical reasoning.
The educational approach
NursEscape combines principles of experiential learning, scenario-based learning, gamification and serious gaming, using the logic of digital escape rooms.
These approaches are integrated into activity design, creating a framework in which learners are asked to explore a scenario, evaluate available information, connect data, solve problems and make decisions that shape the progression of the activity.
Game elements are incorporated with a defined educational purpose and linked to the learning objectives of each activity. In this way, interaction becomes part of the learning process rather than simply a game element.
Learning in a safe environment
In nursing education, the opportunity to apply knowledge and make decisions in a safe environment is an important part of the learning process. Error, when accompanied by appropriate feedback and reflection, can become an opportunity for learning.
NursEscape provides a digital environment in which learners can test their knowledge and reasoning, examine their choices, receive feedback and, where the activity allows it, try again.
In this way, the focus shifts from “what do I know?” to “how do I use what I know when I need to make a decision?”
Who we are
NursEscape is an initiative of the Healthcare Innovation Laboratory, Department of Nursing, University of Thessaly.
Its development connects nursing education with educational technology and research, with the aim of creating digital learning experiences that can be used in the education of students and health professionals.
NursEscape is designed as an environment that can evolve through educational application, evaluation, research and collaboration.
